3.0 out of 5 stars Too big a coutry, too small a book, 2 July 2004
This review is from: England (Lonely Planet Travel Guides) (Paperback)
While England is quite small there is an awfull lot packed into it. The same cannot be said of this book. Many areas of the country are very short on detail. I think that a visitor may find it useful as long as they realise that they will also be missing a lot if they only use this book. There seems to be a lot of detail on just London while counties such as Norfolk have very little information. As with most Lonely Planet books it is good to have but it would be better to seek more information on the spot.

i am at complete odds with most of this review.

On the contrary, England is a very small country.

There is also a very unfair point. Is there as much to see or inform the reader about in Norfolk as there is in London? Of course not. What essentially needs to be seen and known about in Norfolk and London is covered here, and not surprisingly London outweighs almost every county in the country.

With pubs, night clubs, restaurants etc, the authors obviously cannot list everything in every county and city. Only what they can recommend. If a personal favourite of yours didn't make the cut, it doesn't make it a bad book.

i do agree with your final comment. Lonely Planet, Eyewitness or Rough Guide books are just guides, not dictations. The most important thing when travelling is to talk to locals and do/find things out yourself!
