A good introduction to Franz Kafka's life and work,
This review is from: Kafka: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions) (Paperback)
This is a useful modern introduction to the life and work of Franz Kafka by a respected academic. Ritchie Robertson outlines the biography, sets the author's work in the context of its time and place, and discusses key works. His approach is primarily psychological and sociological, and perhaps the only question mark is that this rational, dispassionate scrutiny does rather work to de-emphasise the strangeness of Kafka's imagination and the power of his writing.
A surprising amount of detail has been crammed into this pocket-sized book, at the price of small print - some readers may prefer the Kindle version for this reason. There is a good, up-to-date (to 2004) list of books for further reading.
Recommended to anyone looking for an authoritative introduction to Kafka.
