5.0 out of 5 stars Tremendous Series, 8 Sept. 2013
This review is from: George Gently Series 5 [DVD] (DVD)
There are some creature comforts in life that enable relaxation and homeliness with engaging television. George Gently is the epitome of this. He has charisma and an attraction with straightforward honesty despite the many difficult situations faced. In Series Five we are in 1968. George, (Martin Shaw) and side-kick Bacchus (Lee Singleby) have to cope with racial tension, death within snobbery, baby snatching and illegal adoption and a criminal out to seek revenge on George who makes a formidable pairing with Bacchus. The Northumberland scenery is outstanding as is the late sixties scenario.

Needless to say, this is wonderful television drama with police investigation and interrogation in an up to date Miss Marple fashion tracing detective work through the ages. This is not derogatory. Gently and the excellent dutiful Bacchus, with his domestic problems, get results with detective work despite danger. The final episode is traumatic with an obsessional shooter, Melvin Rattigan (Ralph Brown) at large. It shows their loyalty, respect and determination facing a killer to get justice whatever the expense. It is a model of the care that George Gently shows for his colleagues, victims and their relatives. The finale is a cliff-hanger. Will the characters survive the gun-wielding attack by Rattigan that threatens both protagonists' lives? All we can do is hope so, as this is a supreme and uncomplicated series, well acted, directed and scripted. Absolutely fabulous, as they say with hopefully more to come

4 CDs with one episode on each. They are 1) Gently Northern Soul. 2) Gently With Class. 3) Lost Child. 4) Gently In the Cathedral. Extras are behind the scenes filming at Durham Cathedral. The stars must have been queuing for a guest appeance. We see Kevin Whateley, Alison Steadman, Helen Baxendale, Maggie O'Neill and Geraldine Somerville amongst others.

Marvellous entertainment set convincingly for the time. Episodes are produced, directed and acted with conviction and authenticity. Excellent.
