Out of the mouths of babes.
From humble beginnings on the little-known MTV network, a young visionary called Johnny Knoxville presents this powerful, shocking and ultimately challenging look at modern life. Johnny is charged with the mission of revealing the self-destructive nature of young males in a world without wars. He, and his band of acolytes, push the human form to its limits in an attempt to produce some reaction from a generation deadened to physical sensation through overuse.
The story unfolds through a series of disparate scenes, initially unrelated, but on second viewing revealing a moral profundity seldom matched in modern cinema. In one touching scene, Mr Margera sits passively through his son's desparate attempts to gain attention, by igniting fireworks in his room at 4am. Unable to raise even the pathological rage that would normally arise in such a situation, Mr Margera is clearly beyond help as a father, and can only be castigated for his lack of paternal instinct.
In another scene, "Steve-o" hangs upside down with a raw chicken protruding from his rectum. He pits his wits against one of nature's oldest killers, the alligator. In his petrified attempts to avoid the jaws of this noble beast, "Steve-o" disdainfully casts aside notions that humans are top of the evolutionary ladder. As his comrades stand by in awed silence, "Steve-o" perhaps provides a glimpse of man in an earlier state, trying to protect his meal from the grasp of hungry predators.
To continue would simply detract from the joys of discovering for yourselves the extra depths hidden in this contemporary masterpiece. I urge everyone to watch this film. You may even find that, in exploring the masochistic tendancies of the human male, it awakens a physical response in you. My girlfriend, for example, is inexplicably compelled to rush from the room, leaving me to my musings almost as soon as the opening credits roll.
