This review is from: The Weak And The Wounded (col. Vinyl) [VINYL] (Vinyl)
I have only just discovered the band Alaskan. Originally a 4 piece consisting of Gary: Guitar, Cory: Bass, Scotty: Drums and Kevin: Vocals. After their 2009 S/T release Kevin left the band and vocal duties were divided between the remaining members. To be honest it was perhaps the best thing that happened because from 2009’s S/T to 2010’s the Weak and the Wounded there is a 100% difference in production values and tighter sound. Vocals did altered from the gruff tones of Kevin to the shout vocals of Gary and Cory although this style better suits their sludge, full-on post-metal /rock sound. The guitar here is powerful, distorted, echoed and flanged with some nice post-metal riffs, the bass is prominent and the drums pound away. Obvious comparisons are the Cult of Luna and the great Isis. Every song is well crafted and last from around 5 to 9 minutes. The band does not really stop for slower songs and the wall of guitar is only interrupted by softer stuff within the songs. The Weak and the wounded maybe 4 years old but is still is an excellent piece of post-rock. What you may not like is no lead guitar, personally does not bother me, the shout vocal style, personally I love the aggression however even though the lyrics are printed inside I still can’t understand them.
I put this band close to my favourite post-rock bands, better than Neurosis, and I possibly like them more than Isis. They are not as well-known as other bands but don't overlook them! If you like bands like the Cult of Luna and Isis you will surely like Alaskan. I’d also check out their Adversity; Woe and their new release Despair, Erosion, Loss. This version of Weak and the Wounded comes in nicely coloured vinyl and you get to download it from Amazon via autorip. You can check out their sound via the Alaskan bandcamp. This will become an overlooked classic - buy it! Highly recommended.
