Alfred Newman and Ken Derby Triumph,
This review is from: The Flower Drum Song (Audio CD)
This is my personal favourite of the available recordings of this neglected score. It is very different from the recordings of the stage productions. The songs occur in a different order and, of course, the arrangements are very different too.
It is in this department that this recording is a real winner. The overture is stunning. How well Alfred Newman's scoring fitted the wonderful credit titles in the film. Most of the dance arrangements are included. The "Chop Suey" hoe down being the only one missing. "Love Look Away" is beautifully sung by Marilyn Horne and there is Rosemary Clooney's recording of this song as a bonus track.
This is definitely worth getting.
