no problem with my DVD,
This review is from: Ozu - Vol 4 (Late Autumn - Autumn Afternoon) [DVD] (DVD)
I was hesitating to purchase this volume because of the previous review, but in the end I was overwhelmed by the temptation to watch ozu's new titles. And I don't regret my decision. To me the quality of the DVDs seemed as good as other volumes from Tartan. I suspect the problem was of the reviewer's DVD, if at all. If so, two stars is not a just review for such great films as these, especially when you consider the fact that many people don't read reviews carefully to understand why some products got only a couple of stars. I own all the volumes released so far, and I recommend that you do so if you're a fan of ozu. And I ask Tartan to publish more titles from ozu, such as Ukikusa Monogatari (Story of Floating Weeds) (both 1934 and 1959).

Glad to hear your copy of Autumn Afternoon worked out well for you. I definitely had a problem on mine, but Late Autumn was fine, and indeed I have most of the other Tartan DVDs of Ozu, all those were fine too. Hopefully it was just that one DVD I had that was bad, but I did feel it worth pointing out the potential problem, especially as Tartan didn't reply to my inquiry ever. I too have heard they've now gone out of business, but you'll find that Artificial Eye have released the DVD of Floating Weeds, the later version. However, the Criterion Collection in the US has both versions of Floating Weeds in the one DVD set, and their version is way superior in quality to the Artificial Eye version. So, if you can view Region 1 DVDs, or have an open region player, you can watch the Criterions. www.dvdbeaver.com has a lot of reviews and stills from different DVDs from around the world and you can compare the quality of various versions of Ozu movies on DVD. The Criterion Autumn Afternoon looks better than the one I had from Tartan, in case you're interested. Seems we both love that film, and Ozu's other films, so good luck finding those you enjoy in DVD versions that do them justice. I would point out that, as this amazon page is for a specific DVD product, any review on here should logically be understood as a review of that DVD product and not of the original films, which are of course five stars due to the genius of Ozu. It doesn't do any prospective buyer much good to base the review on the original film, however, if the DVD on this page is what is actually being advertised, bought and sold.

Thanks very much for the info about the region 1 editions.
"It doesn't do any prospective buyer much good to base the review on the original film, however, if the DVD on this page is what is actually being advertised, bought and sold." Unfortunately, Amazon tends to duplicate reviews from one edition of a book or DVD to another, so it's always best to mention which edition you're reviewing.
