A good read.,
This review is from: The Winnowing Circle (Paperback)
I first came to Kevin Roberts through his intriguing novel Helsingor, the background story of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. His latest work, The Winnowing Circle, is a story of passionate relationships set against the background of the mid twentieth century Greek dictatorship.
Roberts is, by nature, a miniaturist. His novels are concise, his chapters short and succinct and his sentences frequently brutally crisp and succinct. But his themes are large; love, life and death, political passion, cultural conflicts and man's inhumanity to man (and woman!). He can both sustain an engaging narrative----you really have to read on to discover what happens----and his powers of description and depiction are remarkable. He is equally at home when writing about outback Australia, cosmopolitan Britain or the virtually inaccessible reaches of a remote Aegean island.
This is not a six hundred page novel to stretch over a two-week holiday. It is, however, ideal for slipping into your pocket and reading on the flight. And it is all the better for its carefully calculated focus and conciseness.
