You'll probably be thinking of buying this because you loved The Geometrid or because you're a Belle and Sebastian fan. Don't.
Buy it, but just find a different reason.
This is a darker and stranger album than The Geometrid. The band has been through a lot of mysterious transformations since then. This has completely changed their musical direction. They've found a new sound that is a more guttural, bass-guitar based, jazz sound with thick, slow bass-lines. Gone are the kooky lyrics and clever synths and I'm not entirely convinced that it is for the better. Imagine that the original band died and were resurrected as zombies - this is the music they would produce.
If I'd never heard The Geometrid then I'd probably have loved this but expectation is such a nasty thing. After 5 minutes I had to eject the CD to check that it really was by Looper. I only listened to it once and left it aside in my pile of CDs to forget. But somehow, it found its way into my car and I gave it a second chance. Hmm, that was better. Only after many repeated listenings did it finally make its full effect felt. It is a fantastic album, reminiscent in oddness to Portishead's Dummy when it was first released.
If only I could forget the Lopper of old then I would fully appreciate that "Good Girls" is actually a better song than "Bug Rain". Overcome your expectations and give it a try. Just forget Bell and Sebastian or the Looper of old and you're away.
