Being a long time fan of WR I was especially interested to come across this book. It is not only a detailed study of WR's recorded output from 10971 to when they split up in 1986, but also traces the recordings of the groups founders, Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter, from the 1950's through to now. There is also information on side projects the two were involved with; I found the chapter on the recordings Joe and Wayne made with Miles Davis especially interesting. A large number of support players had gone through the WR "revolving door" over the years, especially drummers, and these are all listed in the book. Of special note is bass player Jaco Pastorius who helped raise WR to almost rock star status in the late 1970's by his amazing playing and on stage antics. Unfortunately he had mental health issues, probably not helped by drink and drugs and died in 1987 after being beaten to death by a bouncer whist trying to gain entry to a nightclub.
The author ranks each recording by awarding stars, of course this is very much down to personal taste but I enjoyed comparing my "ratings" with his. There is a useful summary discography at the end of the book that details each recoding, this includes DVD's.
Clearly the book is a labour of love with much detailed information that should please any WR fan. Recommended.
