Promising but kinda frustrating,
This review is from: Under the Dome [DVD] (DVD)
I've rarely watched a tv series that is quite as hit and miss as Under the Dome, its packed full of interesting ideas but not all of it really works.
The set up is basic but brilliant - a mysterious dome appears out of nowhere over Chesters Mill, a small American town. We then follow the townsfolk as they attempt to come to terms with life inside the dome and possibly find a way out. Based on the book by Stephen King and developed by Brian K Vaughan (a writer on Lost as well as various comics including the excellent Y The Last Man) it's very much a cross between Lost and The Stand.
The mystery of the dome is explored slowly but at times feels like a bit of a macguffin as the people trapped inside take centre stage. It seems virtually everyone in the town has a secret of some description so there's plenty of story to go around. There are some complex and interesting characters (Big Jim and his son Junior being standouts) but there are also a few walking cliches that drift in and out. The are moments of great invention but also some real eye rolling, head slapping developments. It's difficult to elaborate more without giving away too much about the plot.
Perhaps it's a case of a series finding its feet in the first season and some of the more interesting threads will be picked up in season two (the final episode here seems to suggest this). I'll be having a crack at season two to find out, in the meantime I'd recommend a go at this to make up your own mind (especially as it's on Amazon Prime at time of writing).
