Mellow music at its best,
This review is from: On and On (Audio CD)
As with many other reviewers on this page, I had never heard of Jack Johnson when I first heard his music and I was quite surprised that the industry had managed to keep such a promising secret.
On and On, like Brushfire Fairytales, perfectly evokes sunsets on hazy evenings, tropical beaches and campfires. But just as great as this album is to fall asleep to, I've played it many times and just sat and felt happy. Jack's voice is so mellow that it suits the music perfectly.
My favourite aspect of Jack's music is his lyrics - no repetitive tales of jilted love or booty calls here. Instead we get everything from the media to prevalent social issues such as the tale of a child murderer in the brilliant 'Cookie Jar'.
And in a world where increasing amounts of people think the key to happiness is spending hundreds of pounds on clothes, mobile phones and jewellery, it's nice to hear Jack sing 'Look at all those fancy clothes/But these clothes keep us warm just like those' in 'Gone'.
Overall, I don't think you have to be a fan of a particular kind of music to like this cd. It doesn't fall into a category except for generally good music made by an incredibly talented guy.
