This review is from: Doctor Sleep (Shining Book 2) (Hardcover)
when I heard there was to be a sequel to "The Shining", I was excited. Then I heard it was about "vampires" who attack children that Shine, and I was immediately turned off; current fiction is entirely over-saturated with vampires.
But then I read the cover blurb that clarified the nature of the menace here; these are evil, cunning people who torture children to death and live off their screams. That sounded genuinely horrifying to me, so I took a chance, and...
...was thrilled by nearly every page. There is a sense of closure that reveals the fate of all the characters from "The Shining", and this story of the adult Dan Torrence is honestly gripping. Succinctly, he had a rough time since he and his mother escaped the Overlook Hotel, and he is facing a life not to different from his father's, until... Well. There's so much going on here, I won't spoil the details- but the pages fly by so easily that you won't need to wait long to find them out for yourself. I wouldn't honestly label it "scary", but it's definitely tense and you'll care about the characters it features.
In short, this book flows better than "11/22/63", and the ending is so very satisfying, unlike the damp squib that marred "Under the Dome." Buy it. It's one of Stephen King's very best books, and couldn't be written any better.
