Let's get one thing straight Athlete's second album was pants. I don't really know what they were trying to pull with that but it looked like an attempt to emulate Snow Patrol by completely changing direction in order to increase record sales, get on the opening of a Hollyoaks episode and generally appeal to bedwetters. Why they would want to this when they were purveyors of such a unique and interesting sound is completely beyond me. No-one in my book can out wallow Keane so just leave them to it as they're much better at it then Coldplay, Snow patrol or the odious James Blunt.
So on to the album itself, yes it is a marriage of their two previous albums and what you are left with is much like being snogged by Uma Thurman only to be kicked in the knackers by The Rock. It has it moments when they hark back to their first album but then they retrace their steps down that wallowy road and it just doesn't work. It's a shame really as I used to really like them - now they're just a band I used to like and have caused me to part with some hard earned money - maybe I can still exchange it for some doughnuts?
