ELO relevant at last...Get over it!!!,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Mr. Blue Sky: The Very Best Of Electric Light Orchestra (Audio CD)
I'll be dead straight....I was never an big ELO fan. Great songs...yes. Naff, sometimes cringe worthy seventies/eighties production. Absolutely!!!. And that's the point of this record that some of the reviewers seem to be missing (yup - ELO fans...another reason not to like them). To younger music fans, ELO are almost irrelevant. Something to find in Dads record collection. Definitely not cool.
So, rather than criticising Jeff Lynne, accept that maybe this is his attempt to attract some attention to his "band" and his songs(songs are featured on current films - Savages - and recent video games) and attract new fans. If you are an ELO fan, do you not want other people to "get" them??? What's the issue???
So, to this album. I've always hoped he would do this album. These songs sound great, they sound fresh, they sound relevant (Not exactly comments that could be made about ELO Part II). This is an ELO I could love.
If you are a young music fan or previously not enamoured with ELO...PLEASE BUY THIS!!! Give it a try!!.
Telephone Line, Showdown, Mr Blue Sky...Songs that are not only influenced by Lennon and McCartney but challenge their greatness.
Jeff Lynne is a musical genius. He produces, he plays all instruments and his singing is still amazing. He is one of the very few remaining exceptional British artists and yet he still doesn't get the recognition in British music history that's due. Although this would also seems partly due to some ELO Fans and their continued "support".
There was a reason Jeff Lynne was in the Wilbury's with Orbison, Dylan, Harrison and Petty, and that was because he was as good as, if not better, than each of them. This record proves that!!!

Frankly, I don't give a toss whether people "get" ELO. The band was NEVER cool and I didn't give a toss about that either. I love their music - it was the backing track to my teenage years but that doesn't mean Jeff Lynne should be immune from criticism when he releases an album that pretends to be an ELO album when it's actually a solo album of cover versions of ELO recordings.
Amazon reviews are there for those who've bought a product to give their honest opinion and my honest opinion is that newcomers and old hands alike would be better off sticking with the existing "best of" collections (many of which Lynne has remastered) or buying Out of the Blue or A New World Record. If you truly want to "get" ELO, that is where to begin, not with these inferior rehashes.
