Why you may need this
Overtime magnetically recorded video signal deteriorate. Also tape is prone to damp and fungal attack if not stored correctly. The software also allows you to record sounds from old LP's and tapes.
What it does
The package converts analogue video into digital so that it can be stored on a computer or DVD disk.
In the box
The box contains, the converter box, leads, software and instructions. You will need a Video recorder/player or audio source to use this software. If you have VHS tapes but no longer have a VHS video player car boots are a cheap source of these.
The software booted from the DVD and setup on my Windows 7 (64bit) machine with no problems at all. The process was fully automated after I had selected the language and accepted the licence agreement. Installation took about 3 minutes.
This was easy using the supplied cables. I connected an old VHJS machine to the converter box and a cable runs from the converter box into a vacant USB 2.0 port on my PC. Any analogue device can be connected including video recorders, video cameras and I suppose older analogue video editing equipment although I have not tried this.
The software interface and data capture
When the user click on the icon you are presented with a menu with three options - easy mode, advanced mode and audio recording mode to record sound from old records and cassette tapes.
This is a picture driven guide mode and all settings are done for the user. You first select your output device which is either DVD or Blu Ray. The user is then asked to insert blank media into the chosen drive. Following this the recording time is set and then all you have to do is press play on the VHS recorder and record on the software and the rest is taken care of. This mode is easy to use and just makes a copy of the tape or cassette for you.
This allows simple editing to take place before burning to the DVD or Blu Ray. The editing options are very simple but all most people will ever need if they are just backing up old analogue tapes etc. I have tended to use the basic mode as all I have wanted to do is make copies while the tapes still work so that I can come back to them and edit later.
Audio Recording mode
This mode allows old records, tape recordings and cassette tapes to be recorded onto DVD etc. It is very simplistic but does the job well if you just want a like for like copy.
ON short (under 20 minutes) VHS camera clips the basic mode coped well and the resulting files when played back were fine. When copying longer tapes I did notice the odd glitch in the video quality but it was only on screen for less than a second. I think interference was picked up by the unit or my PC on that occasion. I tried a 2 hour VHS video in easy mode and it copied correctly but took a long time and the hard drive in the PC was working very hard. CPU usage was nearly always around 90% or more as video copying is a very CPU intensive task so you need a reasonably fast computer with lots of memory to get reliable results. I am using a new Intel i% based machine with SSD. 1TB hard drive and 16Gb of Ram which seems to cope OK with this software. I can see lesser computers struggling with this software.
I have now copied lots of VHS and VHS camera tapes across using this software and generally the setup and execution is easy. He copies are as good as the originals in many cases.
For the money this offers a simple and effective was of transferring old analogue tapes and music to digital. The editing effects in advanced mode are basic but probably all most of us will ever need. For me this package has worked well but I can see other reviewers have had problems. I think this must be down to their computers systems not being able to buffer quickly enough due to not having the horsepower to run this software. For me it has been stable and very useful so I can recommend it.
