This review is from: George Tinworth: Harriman-Judd Collection (Hardcover)
This book is great in all senses of the word. A luxurious padded cover in large format. great colour plates, reliable text, good index and fantastic bibliography.
The Harriman Judd collection is a great example of a partnership with discerning taste and open pockets; this was supposed to be the first volume on the HJ collection of studio and art pottery. The other volumes never materialised but the subsequent sales catalogues in two parts with the Harriman Judd names as the title make up for that omission somewhat.
The text covers the entire life and career, not just the Doulton years and collaboration with the Martin brothers.
If you thought Tinworth was just frogs and mice being cute then this book will open your eyes. Some of the religious themed pieces are stunning and reminiscent of renaissance secular art at the time of Donatello and his ilk without the self importance and hype of the Pre Rapaelite Brotherhood.
While the collection is the best of the best, the bibliography listing magazine articles really helps researching the whole canon of the work of Tinworth.
In conclusion, if you have any fondness for the ceramics of Tinworth, this book will be a sheer joy.
