Ella, no frills,
This review is from: Like Someone in Love - feat. Stan Getz (Audio CD)
It took me many years to come round to Ella`s way of singing. I tend to avoid scat, or the more blatantly `jazz vocalist` style, preferring Tony Bennett or Sinatra to, say, Mel Torme, brilliant though the latter was, and Peggy Lee or Dinah Washington to Carmen McRae or, until relatively recently, Ella.
Tastes change - though I still steer clear of the `scatty` side of jazz singing. There`s little of that on this beautifully sung and played 1957 album of standards, on four of which no less a figure than Stan Getz plays sax. The two suit each other perfectly.
One draw for me is the inclusion of a handful of my favourite songs: More Than You Know (a wonderful song I`ve loved by Judy Garland and, in her `audition piece` in The Fabulous Baker Boys, actress Michelle Pfeiffer), We`ll Be Together Again and What`s New (both of which I knew in their benchmark versions by Sinatra), How Long Has This Been Going On, I Thought About You, and the title track - which has been covered more recently, delightfully as well as eccentrically, by Bjork.
All of the nineteen songs here - of which the last four are extras not on the original release, bringing this disc to a generous 70 minutes - are sung with Ella`s customary integrity and adherence to the song`s meaning and mode of expression. She can be as expressive as any singer, but never overdoes anything, at least not on this flawless album. Her girlish quality has often been remarked upon, and it`s displayed on many of these songs, not least Like Someone In Love itself. These are all ballads, slow or mid-tempo, and it must surely be one of Ella`s most coherent recordings, intelligently programmed from start to finish.
This is singing! She makes it sound so simple and effortless. To some (including, as I say, myself) Ella can be an acquired taste, but I would say that it`s a mark of an adult discernment that it makes room for this truly great singer. She`s at her peak on this cherry-picked selection.
Happily and unreservedly recommended. Hear this great album!
