Poor range outdoors, no traction indoors,
This review is from: Roary the Racing Car - Remote Control Roary (Toy)
Got this car for our 4 year old. First of all good good high powered batteries (tried both Energizer hightech and duracell plus power) so it worked well (I hoped).
Indoors we have laminate flooring which is perfect (I thought) for driving. The problem with this car is the tyres are smooth and hard (made of plastic I think rather than rubber) meaning when you move the car forward the wheels spin for a second or two before one grips at little before the other meaning the car turns before straightening out, so you can never get it to go where it's pointing (ours always goes the same way so clearly one tyre has just a little better grip than the other).
The steering is not very responsive either, but again seems to work better one way than the other. Both ways seem to have a slight delay, in particular when I press the right button it takes over a second before the wheels turn, making the car almost impossible to control properly.
I thought the traction issue might be better outside, but taking the car outside revealed the main flaw of the car - the range. I tried the car on a mainly cloudy day (white clouds so reasonably bright but no direct sunlight) and honestly the range was 2 metres at best in more shaded areas and no more than a metre (seriously!) in the brighter areas. I doubt the car would work at all on a sunny day. I believe the problem relates to the fact the remote uses infra red (there is no aerial on the car or remote). Before you ask, I was pointing the remote directly at the car during these tests, if you don't the car won't move outdoors.
The remote itself also isn't very good. The positioning and size of the buttons are poor and not easy to operate.
Given this is aimed at children (ages 3+) the product is simply rubbish. This product isn't that expensive but it's certainly not the cheapest either, even taking the price into account can't give it more than one star.

Thank you, a very helpful review. I've read quite a few others but this one helped me make up my mind for sure...I won't be buying this car for my grandson after all.
