Not exactly what Carl Sagan wanted...,
This review is from: Contact (Special Edition) [DVD] (DVD)
When I read a book and watch afterwards the movie upon which it is based, it's almost every time a deception. This movie is brilliantly directed, all actors are convincing but it lacks Carl Sagan's idea of representing each race to the aliens' invitation. Five seats were in fact installed in the machine's cockpit for that purpose. What the movie shows, is an absurd decision and unexplained desire from the scientific committees to send only an American. Was that to make the American audience happy ? Read the book.

Though I think the film is great I empathize with with the comments made. Mind you, if you compare for examples the film versions of The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Life of Pi and the TV versions of Terry Pratchett's books there are many, many differences from the originals. Film is a completely different media to the written word and sometimes change is unavoidable for all kinds of reasons. I have just starting to read The Game of Thrones series and am interested to discover the differences between the series of novels and the made for TV films.
