An obvious first novel.,
This review is from: Nightseer (Mass Market Paperback)
If you're planning on buying this book because you're a fan of the Anita Blake/Meredith Gentry series and you're desperate for your next fix, I would suggest you don't. I did, and found it to be a mistake.
This was Hamilton's first book, or so I understand, and it shows in the over use of fantasy lanugage and plot devices - think of it like this: Nightseer is an overkill of Fantasy (or, at least it is if you're used to Meredith Gentry/Anita Blake standard) then Hamilton wrote Anita Blake, which rebounded to a far more modern tone, and then Meredith Gentry landed somewhere in the middle. Hamilton is known for her latter two series, mostly due to the accessiblity she gives to mythical creatures, and the coherency and complexity of her plots and characters. Neither of her trade marks are present in this book.
Her characters are undeveloped and appear shallow, including the heroine - none of them seem to have the complexity she demonstrates so brilliantly in her later books. Background and previous happenings are mentioned, but never explained fully, or given enough significance in the emotional state of the character that you feel they mean something. The ending feels unfinished, like she's come to the end of a chapter, rather than a book, and the overall story focusing on the heroine's prophesy and the destruction of her home is completely unaddressed in the later chapters - almost as though the entire premise for the book has changed. I could go on, but I'd be here a while.
In short, buy this book if you are an avid fantasy/sci-fi fan - don't if you're a Hamilton fan. It's an amibitious story, but unfortunately falls far from what it could be given the talent she shows in other books. A disappointing read overall.

Thank you for this review I am a new reader of The Anita Blake series and have almost finished I read a book a week at the moment I am so addicted. I was wondering where to get my next fix from with the end of the existing books available looming. I was glad to learn about Meredith Gentry which is where I will be heading next so glad I didn't take the plunge with this one as I would hate to be dissapointed.
