A vastly underrated movie,
This review is from: Immortal Beloved [DVD] (DVD)
I remember it well. It was one 'o' clock in the morning, I was just about to turn off the TV when this movie I had never heard of started. It showed a very ill Beethoven in bed as thunder and lightning roared outside and I was hooked. I watched 'Immortal Beloved' to the end and knew that I just had to buy this on DVD immediately but as it hadn't yet been released on region 2 I had to wait and buy the region 1 version. It was worth the wait as this is one of the most underrated movies that I have seen.
Firstly, Gary Oldman is fabulous as Beethoven and captures his intensity perfectly. The story is also extremely compelling as a simple letter written by Beethoven leads to some kind of detective story in order to discover who the true love of his life really was. The conclusion might well be a load of tosh but it works so well within the context of this fine movie.
With an excellent cast and not one dud performance, a superb soundtrack and a film that is fabulous to look at, 'Immortal Beloved' should have done much better than it actually did. In my humble opinion it is better than the much lauded 'Amadeus' which is a good movie but doesn't grab you in the same way that this does. Highly recommended.
