Sailor Malan-One of the few - A hero and great leader,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Sky Tiger: The Story of Sailor Malan (Paperback)
Thank goodness 'Sailor' was fighting for the RAF. Previous reviews have not been complementary about this book, having been written by someone other than the great man himself. This is not an autobiography and this fact is obvious before you purchase it. I felt that the book contained just enough historical detail regarding men, tactics and squadron detail and also combat detail. Obviously the writer had done a great deal of research on such matters and describes the combat action with feeling, no doubt taken from records taken at the time. I doubt if 'Sailor' would have taken the time to write his own autobiography because his work as a fighter pilot was done and he had a remarkable talent for 'moving on' with his life. He could quite easily have stayed in the RAF after the war but decided to return to his native South Africa. What a great shame this great man had to die so young. Perhaps he was able to reconcile his untimely death by recalling all his young friends and colleagues that went before him during the war.
I would recommend this book to anyone, even those not particularly interested in aircraft or WW2. This book is about a true hero and a great leader of men on a scale few of us can imagine.
