Blood, Guts and Hairy Men,
This review is from: The Nail (Paperback)There's no denying that the concept is very cool indeed.
The Nail's single sentence plot description: an ageing wrestler versus bikers from hell is a horror comic fan's wet dream.
Niles and Zombie have fashioned a memorable tale with the aid of Nat Jones' terrifically gruesome artwork. The story hurtles along relentlessly with a real nail biting(no pun intended) sense of urgency. With it's creepy dead of night atmospherics I was genuinley fearful for the good guys safety.
As an action/horror fan I eagerly anticipated the kind of imaginative ass wuppin' our hero The Nail would be dishing out to those denizens of hell. And believe you me he certainly shows no mercy towards those godless s.o.b's. Yep, the fight scenes are satisfyingly brutal and would make even the most seasoned gorehound drop to their knees in reverence.
You can tell that Niles and Zombie are huge horror buffs as the references come thick anfd fast. I had fun spotting the nods to The Evil Dead, Race with the Devil and even a bit of George Romero for good measure.
An amazon.com reviewer suggested that the story could have been a little longer and more fleshed out. I agree that a touch more character development wouldn't have gone amiss.
The foreword to the book is provided by the wrestler/actor Diamond Dallas Page who is a shoo-in to play the Nail on the big screen if the rumours are true.
All I can do now is sit drooling over how great it would be to see the visceral action from the page transferred to the screen.
