A welcome return to the catalogue,

This review is from: Charpentier: Motets à double choeur (Audio CD)
It's a shame Warner Classics have wound back their labels (Teldec, Erato) and sent artists like Harnoncourt, Koopman and Christie elsewere but it is at least good to see the reappearance of old friends on the Naxos-priced Apex label. This particular 2CD set is an excellent survey of Charpentier's polychoral music, and very special for being the only available recording of the Carissimi-like oratorio Josue (Joshua). What makes this 2CD even more welcome is the presence of Latin texts and English translations, which were intermittently lacking in earlier releases in the Apex series. The second CD overlaps with the second CD in the Devos Charpentier Tenebres 2CD released at the same time. But as Koopman and Devos' performances bring out different aspects of the choral Tenebres at this price most listeners will be delighted with the duplication.
