This review is from: Toby's Room (Kindle Edition)
A beautiful piece of writing about the darker, or hidden, side of our nature. And there is a lot going on there, on our hidden side. How we deal with that is at the core of Pat Barker's excellent novel.
Set prior to and during the First World War, the key issues revolve around brother and sister Toby and Elinor Brooke, using childhood glimpses through to young and early adulthood to build a deeply moving story leading to a powerful and believable climax.
It is not really possible or wise to deal with the subject matter here without the risk of spoiling the novel for the reader. The author unveils her plot slowly and skillfully and with immense sympathy for her subject. And her subject is really, simply...us all. Highly recommended.
