This review is from: Human Resource Development: Theory and Practice (Paperback)
This text is clearly written and as a result is very accessible to dip into and out of. The chapters follow a very logical structure from the overarching strategical level through the elements of learning to it's application at work and in the wider context. The chapters are broken into sections as below:
Looking Out: Macro Considerations of HRD
Looking In: Principles of HRD
Looking At: HRD at work
Looking Around: HRD in different contexts
On a critical side, in order to gain readability; the text tends to give a higher level overview of some topic areas and as a consequence alternative texts would be required for further study. Additionally it occasionally feels that, despite the long reference lists, some writings by the authors are used frequently and these are given more weight than other sources.
Considering all the above, for undergraduate or postgraduate study (ie CIPD), this is a very good text for those that are new to the subject area and who struggle with the more 'academic' texts. This book will allow you to take on the information and it provides sufficient references to do further reading.
