This review is from: A Serbian Film. Uncut Limited Edition. DVD. [Region 0] (DVD)
REVIEWED VERSION: 2012 Invincible Pictures US DVD (UNCUT)

Director: Srdjan Spasojevic

Cast: Srdan Todorovic, Sergej Trifunovic, Jelena Gavrilovic, Slobodan Bestic, Katarina Zutic, Andela Nenadovic

SYNOPSIS

Retired porn star Milos (Srdan Todorovic), facing financial difficulties, agrees to make one last porn movie with Vukmir (Sergej Trifunovic). He is neither shown a script nor told about this movie but being desperate he sign the contract. Several days into filming he realizes what he's gotten himself into: a sick snuff film of pedophilia, necrophila and torture porn. When he wants out, they drug him, kill his friend and threaten his family.

THE PROS & CONS

A SERBIAN FILM is a movie that will punch you in the groin and you will need several hours to recuperate - in other words, it delivers what other movies such as THE EXORCIST, HOSTEL, SAW, TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, various "torture porn" movies or any other "scandal" movies promise but FAIL to deliver. Yes, it even makes ICHI THE KILLER look like a kiddie movie.
SO IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED OR CAN'T STOMACHE STRONG VIOLENCE AND SEXUAL CONTENT *** DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE!!!!! ***
However if you are like me, utterly disappointed in the so-called "scandal" movies and are looking for something that will kick you in the groin so hard you will be left breathless, this is probably one of the very few films that will do that.
One issue this movie has, that is constantly brought up - does this movie cross the threshold to what is legal? Banned in several countries and censored in most of the others, it was released UNCUT in the United States of America. So, NO, it does NOT cross that threshold. Several scenes can be considered in the "gray zone" however and will send most people running out of the room, vomiting, I believe. A SERBIAN FILM contains very explicit SEXUAL CONTENT (involving necrophilia and incest, as well as sexual violence), very explicit and gory VIOLENCE and overall very disturbing content.
It is hard to recommend this movie. If you want a "scary" movie, this ISN'T it. It is not scary. It is SHOCKING and DEPRESSING. It is a movie you will never forget. It is a movie you will either love or hate - there is no inbetween. It is a movie that never could have been made in America or Western Europe. Several scenes will make you gag and shake your head in disbelief and most people will not be able to sit through this film. Even hardcore horror buffs will have their problems with A SERBIAN FILM. After watching this movie the first time you will most probably need a serious break from violent movies in general. Yes, it has such an impact. That is which makes this movie stand out so much. This is the (un)holy grail of terror/scandal movies.
I was impressed by the acting. All the actors play their part extremely well - especially the main character Srdjan Todorovic (Milos) and Jelena Gavrilovic (Marija). The score is eerie and suitable, although I am not a fan of this type of music. The writer/director did a terrific job and his style is unique.
I spent years looking for that special movie, that movie that would be THE shocking movie of my life. I believe for moviegoers in the 70s it was THE EXCORCIST or THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE or maybe MARK OF THE DEVIL. I've seen them all at an early age (between 12 and 15) and I wasn't impressed. While they all might be good to very good movies, I found they were over-hyped in shock value. I'm always amazed at the censorship-nazis, be it the MPAA, the BBFC, the FSK or politicians or self-proclaimed moral leaders, that believe their moral values are superior and need to be enforced for everyone. Thanks to these imbeciles however, movies with potential shock value are hyped (in the case of A SERBIAN FILM it is deserved, in other cases not), thus gaining more popularity than they would have if they had simply been ignored.
I however am grateful that we don't have to rely on Hollycrap or England for good boundary-crossing movies that would be impossible to make in the US or England thanks to the censorship-Gestapo. Thanks to France and now Serbia there will be a new level of what is shown on screen.

THE AVAILABLE VERSIONS

The first Western country to have the guts to release the movie was the UK (RESPECT!) - surprisingly the BBFC "only" demanded a total of approx. 4 mins. of cuts, almost only to sexual content. This particular version still delivers a punch and is watchable. (DVD Code 2 / BR Code B)

The US NC-17 version is CUT by less than 1 minute but misses one vital part towards the end which is contained in the UK version but this cut kind of ruins the movie. This version (though less cut than the UK version) is NOT recommended. (DVD CODEFREE)

The new US UNRATED UNCUT version is the version to get - fully uncut and uncensored and DVD CODEFREE (will play on all DVD players!!!!) and has ENGLISH SUBTITLES.

There are also other versions available in several countries which are not English friendly (no subtitles). Several versions are heavily cut - as usual the German FSK 18 version - but also the French retail version. A SERBIAN FILM has been banned in Norway, Spain, Australia and New Zealand (Germany soon to follow).

"It is a movie that never could have been made in America or Europe."

How can you possibly mention this in the same sentence as TCM?! Texas Chainsaw is a bloody masterpiece of cinema and not a film that "didn't deliver" on it's promise. I don't think Tobe Hooper was going for child abuse, rape and baby sex when he made it. So it's not really a worthwhile comparison is it? And lumping it in with all the torture porn rubbish? That's just silly. Serbian film is a powerful well made piece of cinema but compared to TCM...it's utter trash.

@ Stoker:
I've seen just about every so-called "shocker"/"scandal"/"terror" movie out there. The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre was way too tame to deserve to be called that, it did not leave an impression, except that it was totally over-hyped.
A Serbian Film however is probably the most shocking movie ever made, one that I will never forget and of the two movies it is by far superior.
