Reliving my childhood and now asking the questions,
This review is from: Austerity Britain, 1945-1951 (Tales of a New Jerusalem) (Paperback)
I lived through this period and, to be truthful, I only was shown the more privileged side of what must have been an extraordinarily difficult time for my parents.
David Kynaston's excellent review of what really took place between the end of the war (WWII) and my teenage years comes as a revealing surprise. In those years we tended to trust what we were told by politicians and the media alike. We were so very wrong!
Now we can see what an absolute catastrophe the Labour government of the immediate post-war years was. And how we were all duped by the people in charge. Let this be a lesson to those who contemplate another "red-led" government, or to those who may be tempted to emulate the electorate of the immediate post-WWII years. Thank you, David Kynaston, for writing this remarkable, readable book of our times.
