I ordered this book with a gift voucher because of a life-long interest in Cuba. I'm grateful I didn't pay for it. I do not understand the 5 star reviews. My impression was of two very unpleasant people behaving very badly in Cuba. They were totally irresponsible, constantly drunk and careless of the country's laws. The book painted an interesting picture of the underbelly of socialist Cuba (hence 2 stars rather than 1); it portrayed quite well those living outside the law and showed the ways some Cubans attempt to rise above their poor prospects - a Cuba the tourists don't see. But this in no way compensated for the terrible behaviour of the writer, his business partner and many of the participants. How they got away with it (temporarily) is a mystery. The blurb describes this as a love story. If so it's a rough-and-ready love story indeed - I thought their attitude to women was appalling. Pride and Prejudice it isn't. I needed a shower after reading it.
