Great prose but ultimately predictable story,

This is the first John Boyne book I've read and it's beautifully written, sufficiently descriptive without getting bogged down in detail, the focus being more on the human side. Having seen the film The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas I suspect this book is in similar vein, however unlike TBITSP, The Absolutist didn't deliver quite the same same shock at the end - with both you can see where it's headed but TBITSP felt truly tragic whereas, whilst the subject matter of The Absolutist was similarly horrific, I didn't feel the same jolt. Maybe this is due to the power of film with music etc but I suspect it's probably more because the recipient of the wrongdoing (worded like this to avoid being a spoiler!) didn't elicit the same empathy as a child. A good, thought provoking book nonetheless.
