Mozart on an authentic fortepiano? Is it really necessary? Anyone who has Pires's marvellous recordings will be loathed to accept another point of view. I was! All I know is that - perhaps sadly - once you've tried it you can never go back! Mozart on a modern piano just isn't as thrilling and dramatic. The authentic instrument - and Mr van Oort - reveal edges and percussiveness and Beethoven-like masculinity that is hard to achieve on a modern instrument without hammering at it, which Mozart certainly didn't intend, as well as a bright, crystalline delicacy that is at the same time full of a tonal richness equally impossible to achieve on a modern instrument. I think Mozart would actually be horrified by the limitation of the modern instrument: I'm beginning to think Beethoven would be too. I've tried quite a few period instrument performances of these sonatas, and yes some of those sound like they're played on a 'pub piano' - not so these; and others seem to want to go out of their way to prove that everything we already love, and thought we knew, about these pieces is impossible to achieve on an authentic instrument, or that they were originally conceived to be played in a sort of lifeless, technically compromised, clanky monotone - not so these performances. At this price, this is more than just a bargain: it's a gift to yourself.
