I love it when you take a gamble on a random book and it pays off. This was a "suggestion for you" courtesy of Amazon and it had good reviews. Didn't think I'd like it much as the first few chapters seemed a bit slow. But it got better and better. All the detail that I thought was probably OTT at the start of the book was all relevant and weaved into the rest of the story. It's set across the First World War but doesn't really go into the characters who are away, it focuses on those left behind.
I felt incredible frustrations with the our main character Clarissa's predicament and circumstance and I times I wanted to shout at her to tell her family to shove it, but I dare say that's my modern day upbringing that allows me that freedom. In their generation, people of a certain class just didn't do certain things.
Loved the writing, loved how the story drew me in, it's the first book in a while I've been reading while trying to cook, eat etc.
Great, definitely five stars.
