Emotionless but very original,
This review is from: Romeo And Juliet [DVD] (DVD)
Firstly, any fan of Shakespeare should see this interpretation of his greatest love story, as this hugely modernised version is one of the most original and different views of Shakespeare that has ever been produced.
The production and editing is phenomenal, that is without doubt, and the acting can hardly be criticised. However, like most Baz Luhrmann films, this is "style over substance".
This may seem like a bizarre conclusion, as the content was written by the greatest play-write who ever lived, but the focus is very much on the imagery, effects and style of the film rather than the supposed intense feelings of love between the two central characters (or in fact any of the other characters).
Did I care when any of the characters died? Not really.
Was I moved by the tragic ending? Maybe a little, but not too much.
But despite this, any Shakespeare-ite would be silly to ignore one the most original interpretations of the Bard ever made.
