3.0 out of 5 stars Dont buy it for network features, 18 July 2013

This review is from: Panasonic DMP-BD79EB-K Smart Network 2D Blu-ray Player (Electronics)
Pros
Good price
Faster than generation 1 players to load disks
As a basic Bluray/DVD player it does the job very well and for these features alone worth 4 stars

Cons
It doesn't work for the network features that I've tied, hence minus a star.
A software upgrade was successfully performed via a wired connection to my router indicating at least that the box can communicate with the rest of the world
It loads the BBC Iplayer menu and preview images but fails to play ALL content.
The Youtube implementation on this box is not intuitive and prone to constant lock ups.

To put this functionality into context. My Internet connection allows flawless Iplayer and Youtube operation on two other boxes I have connected to the same router.

A small gripe. Why do manufactures think that putting light grey text on a slightly darker grey background is a good idea.

I hear you there. It's like they think, Mmmm that looks cool, without ever trying to read it!

No, but I have other boxes that supply this functionality. I was in the market for a relatively cheap Blueray player and didn't mind too much about the "smart" extras. I was already aware that Panasonic have a poor reputation with getting things like Iplayer to work on other platforms.

iPlayer is now working properly. I contacted Panasonic Support and 2 days later it was fixed.

Hi I had a problem with iPlayer too! It would not play at all, when pressing a programme, the purple circle would appear and after 30 secs a message saying there is a problem with this programme blah blah. I figured it out you need to activate iPlayer at the time your internet speed is the fastest. I done mine at around 3am after 2 weeks of complaining to customer service and it worked! Try 1am-3am as night time the internet is faster! Or try when ever the internet is fast for your household, hope I helped!
