Cheap and useful tool,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: GM300 Non-contact IR Laser Infrared Digital Thermometer - Measurement Range: Between -50 °C and 380 °C (Between -58 °F and 716 °F) (Misc.)
Taking this out of the box and first trying it I was disappointed at its poor accuracy at around room temperatures but after actually reading the instructions and leaving it a couple of hours for the Thermometer to actually acclimatise to the ambient temperature (as it say in the instructions!) it became a lot more accurate.
I actually bought it for use on my central heating boiler flow and returns but have actually found it very useful for identifying cold spots around the house due to poor insulation and cold bridging. For instance I was very pleased to see that the inside pane and frame of my double glazing was just about the same temperature as the inside wall of an insulated cavity wall when the outside temperature was only 3 degrees but astounded to discover that the very edge of the glass where it is sealed and joins the frame was a good 3 degrees C colder demonstrating how much thermal bridging there is at the edges of sealed units.
It amazing how many uses you can find for a simple tool like this - I'm next going to use it when cooking with chocolate to ensure its at the correct temperature so you get that proper chocolate 'snap' - something very difficult to achieve without very accurate temperature control. Also just tested my oven temperature as it seems to cook a lot quicker than expected - appears temp settings on oven are slightly out.
The important thing to remember if taking the thermometer from one place to another is to make sure it first acclimatises to the ambient temperature if you want accurate readings. Very important if coming from outside to inside (or vice versa) with a big temperature differential.
Overall a good (and fun) tool......and very affordable too.
