A glorious evocation of the natural world,

Undertaking a series of walks (and two sea voyages) loosely following in the footsteps of Edward Thomas and other visionary landscape poets, Robert Macfarlane is a fine travelling companion - knowledgeable but never dull or pedantic, entertaining without triteness or flippancy, and poetic without mawkishness or ignoring the impact of the modern world.
Whether describing a walk in snow from his own back door, or walking in Palestine where the very act itself is potentially subversive and dangerous, Macfarlane captures arresting poetic images in the landscape, and vividly describes the visual and emotional impact the land has upon him. His work inspires a desire to see the places and things he has seen, and brings the beauty and harshness of the outdoor environment onto the printed page.
Thoroughly and wholeheartedly recommended; a glorious evocation of the natural world, and the very next best thing to actually being out in the landscape yourself.
