This review is from: Dalziel & Pascoe - Series 1 [DVD] (DVD)
'Dalziel and Pascoe' was always my favourite BBC detective drama. The first series (originally broadcast in 1996) consisted of three fantastic episodes: 'A Clubbable Woman', 'An Advancement Of Learning' and 'An Autumn Shroud', in which the viewers quickly learned a lot about the two policemen, who really were chalk and cheese but made a dynamic force.
Throughout the first series, there are guest appearances from talented British actresses like the veteran performer Prunella Scales, Francesca Annis and Crissy Rock, fresh from international acclaim in the Ken Loach film 'Ladybird Ladybird'.
The show ran for as many as twelve series from 1996-2007, but it's these early episodes that I still regard as some of the very best.
Actor Warren Clarke is brilliant as Superintendent Andy Dalziel and is arguably the star of the show. Dalziel is a hard-drinking, chain smoking, crude but caring, funny and smart man. A contrast to his work partner, the well spoken Inspector Peter Pascoe, played by Colin Buchanan. Both actors work well together and despite their differences, it's clear that both characters earn a great deal of respect for each other.
If your a fan of detective series, 'Dalziel and Pascoe' is essential for any DVD collection of that genre. If you are already a fan, then this series is a great reminder of how brilliant those early series of the show were. Interesting stories, quality writing and good performances all around.
