A must buy which shines despite its flaws,
This review is from: Batman: Arkham Asylum - Classics (Xbox 360) (Video Game)
The chance to be Batman and one that doesn't disappoint in the slightest, well maybe a little but the bad points can be easily forgiven. The controls are simple enough to ensure that you immediately feel like Batman; strong, spry and almost nonchalant dispatching low level criminals and more monstrous entities alike.
The Joker is brilliantly realised in this game and he is like your constant companion throughout the game goading you on and laughing at your efforts throughout adding a nice sense of menace to proceedings, it is like being married to the Joker.
There is quite a lot of freedom as to how you go about this game, beat a group of thugs down in one go or pick them off in a hit and retreat style, both ways equally fun and thankfully it isn't all about hitting baddies as a bit of weight has been put on the detective side to Batman as well which means you will soon be following trails, scaling areas to get a better view on things, opening up new paths and pandering to the Riddler's needs by working out the clues he provides you with. Special mention must go to the amazingly insane Scarecrow sections which are freaky and captivating in equal measure and are short enough to remain special.
Samey character models for friend and foe alike are a bit of a disappointment, it is something which probably won't detract too much from the game, but in combination with the occasionally very samey washed out corridors, it does mean that your overall impression of the game is let down a bit, although in this context all it means is that instead of the masterpiece it could have been it is still quite amazing doing the Batman name proud.
The game does something that you don't see much of these days; it gets better the more you play it so that the game gets more mind blowing the further you get into it. Games don't seem to grow like this these days.
Despite its flaws, of which there are quite a few minor ones, it is a game that you will enjoy while you are playing through it and one that you will miss when you have finished it.
