Cracking preview for the real thing,
This review is from: Gran Turismo 4: Prologue Signature Edition With Bonus Disc (Limited Edition) (Video Game)
I don't think there are many people who won't at least know what Gran Turismo is, but enough time has elapsed for people to make up their minds whether they like it or not. I've spoken to all my friends, and not one of them sits on the fence when it comes to GT: either you love it or you hate it.
With Prologue, Polyphony are appealing mainly to the core of fans that will continue to buy the game through thick and thin (though I personally can't imagine there being anything very "thin" about a Gran Turismo title!). That's not to say that it is inaccessible to anyone that wants to pick it up and have a go, by any means!
The graphics are improved, with more subtleties in the shading and reflections on the cars. The trackside environments too are greatly improved, looking less cardboard cut-out. The introduction of tracks like Citta del Aria brings a new atmosphere to the game, where you actually feel like you can roar round a town in addition to the normal track-racing.
I will agree with others that the initial car selection (and others that you win through completing the tests) do leave a little to be desired. I was happy with the fact that a lot of the repeated Japanese cars (100 different variations of Subaru Legacy, anyone?) were seemingly limited in GT3, but they seem to have returned. In all fairness, this is just a preview, and Polyphony are not going to give you all the star cars in such a release, but I just hope that the greatly expanded range we are promised for GT4 doesn't bring all these variations back!
The gameplay is brilliant, with even the most infuriating of tests making you repeatedly try them until you succeed.
I could go in to the comparisons with PGR2 et al, but there wouldn't be much point, that's another argument altogether (but you KNOW GT4 is gonna roast PGR over an open fire!). All in all, if you love the GT series, get this to add to your collection and enjoy it thoroughly, but if you've not experienced the GT phenomenon as yet, and are just looking for a racing game, then wait till GT4 comes out.
