`Shadow, Shadow, Shadow, Shadow, Shadow. This was not how things were meant to turn out.',
This review is from: Fragile Things (Paperback)
After finding `Smoke and Mirrors' patchy and `American Gods' (the writer's preferred version) a looong haul, it was so good to read this - instant confirmation that this is indeed the Genius who declared himself from the first `Sandman' comic story (`Sleep of the Just')
Gaiman has won a host of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror awards - this is wrong - he should have won a host of mainstream literary awards as well, because as these stories demonstrate, there is no real competition in terms of all-roundness - from the exact parody of style, to characterisation to plotting - and the ability to assume entirely disparate narrative voices.
Gaiman, I am convinced, has not received his due recognition as a writer because he is regarded as of the Fantasy genre - nothing wrong with that. Those of us who delight in his work would have it no other way.
