The 'Philips Friends of Hue Personal Wireless Lighting Lightstrips Starter Set' is basically a roll of LED lights on a sticky-backed strip, which you can control the colour of via an App on your Smart Device.
In the box you get two rolls of the special 'Lightstrips' which measure about 2 metres in length each. These lightstrips have a small LED light along their surface about every inch or so, which when stuck on to a surface, will illuminate along its entire length.
Once you've chosen where you want the lights to be (I have ours running along the inside lip of a large bookshelf in the study), you simply peel off the backing and stick the lightstrip into place. Connected to the lightstrip is a power lead which you will need to run to your nearest mains socket.
Once all of this is in place, you'll need to go to the 'Philip Hue' website and download the necessary app to really enjoy all the features of your swanky new lighting.
However, it's not all that easy to find the Philips Meet Hue App as the instruction manual points you to a non-existing page. However, if you search in your Apple App Store for 'Philips Hue' you'll find it there. It's free to download (unlike a lot of the other Apps that Philips Hue recommend!). You'll also need iOS 6.0 firmware or later to download and use the App - so if you have an iPad 1 then the App won't be compatible (the iPad 1 only goes up to iOS 5.1).
As such, I had to rely on my wife's Android phone, and after we downloaded the 'Philips Hue App', it was actually very easy to play around with and set the colours we liked. To be honest, the 'Light Control' function in the App is the one that proved the most useful. Just choose the colour you want and it automatically adjusts your lightstrips accordingly.
To be honest, I didn't think the lights would be all that great, but once set up, the simplicity of changing the colour whenever you fancy it is great. I can see myself adjusting the colour depending on the time of year etc.
So, other than the lies that the lights are compatible with the iPad 1, my wife and I are actually really quite happy with the lights and the versatility that they offer.
