SHE'S MY IDEAL,
This review is from: There Goes That Song Again (Audio CD)Margaret Whiting was blessed with a crystal-clear voice and, probably nurtured by her songwriter father Richard, an appreciation of the fact that having laboured to bring forth a song, composers preferred to hear it performed as written. It could be said that she made the realisation of that ideal her life's work, because when she died earlier this year she left a vast legacy of recordings, any one of which could be held up as the definitive version.
Jasmine has issued already both a compilation of her duets with Jimmy Wakely (JASMCD 2603: "Till We Meet Again") and a 4-CD boxed set (JASBOX 17-4), and they are now supplemented by this second 4-CD set. It features several singles from the Capitol and Dot labels, but the compilation is concentrated in the main upon selected tracks from her somewhat later LP output.
The tracklist shows accompanists, and I wish it included the year of each recording, and indicated which tracks are in stereo, but that is a minor cavil. Listening to these classic recordings of songs by some of the last century's greatest songwriters, it's easy to appreciate why Margaret Whiting earned the soubriquet "The Composers' Singer". Her renditions are faultless, and the arrangements uniformly excellent. These recordings sound as fresh today as when they were recorded, over 60 years ago.
