This review is from: (Live) in Protest (Audio CD)
Being an avid fan of Lowkey, I stumbled across songs from this on You Tube and subsequently bought the album. This showcases some of the UK's finest Rappers I've heard. It is a studio album despite what the title may suggest! The music itself is raw and atmospheric and mostly consists of socially and politically conscious lyrics.
'3. City of Satan' depicts the brutal reality of living on the streets of the wrong neighborhood. Sharp stabs of brass are interspersed with the chilled beat in '4. Stop Lying' creating a dynamic and addictive hook. The grittiest track lyrically is '6. The Game'; "I stay forever raw with it, I love the taste of coke in the back of my throat three days after I snorted it" the rapping creates a gripping atmosphere in this track. '10. Speaker's Corner' is an anthemic testament to real Hip Hop's fight for the freedom of speech, with infectious lyrical hooks that provoke you to join in!
Those are the four tracks that stand out in my opinion but there a few other gems and on the whole the album is consistently good yet there's a great variety of beats and lyrical styles throughout. Five stars is for the excellent standard of rapping and the presentation of their music. The production sometimes lets down this album - Especially in 'Speakers Corner', where the track the kick drum sound is distorted.
I would definitely recommend this album.
