As a female business and executive coach and previously a high school principal I understand only too well the frustrations of a world that doesn't always fit. Emily and her ideal of being a poet didn't really fit in her time or in her family. There are lots of suppositions about her strange nature and her refusal to engage in domestic chores as she considered herself to be a poet. I love her poetry because it doesn't really care about rules. There are no titles only numbers. the punctuation is mainly ellipsis , little dashes. when I write poetry I distinctively do that , I don't want to punctuate, i want to express, i want to say and i want to feel the words not control them. so if you are looking for a different style of writing you have certainly found it in Emily. I love this idea, " I would not stop for death so he kindly stopped for me" - I think it speaks so strongly of our haste today. Much of Emily's work has this very contemporary feel. Her writing is a powerful reminder of the frustrations that women felt about being served up to men as a prize. this was a time when marriage was the strong expectation for all women. Emily bucked this trend too. She had suitors but never did marry. I would strongly recommend any student of literature, life or women to pick this up. As an executive and business coach I have found that my women clients enjoy being introduced to Emily as a model to think for themselves and not to be defined by the culture around them or indeed by the expectations of others. My motto is "define yourself, it's later than you think" ! I believe there is a gap without her work. Enjoy.
