I absolutely loved this story from the first page. As in all Jan Ruth's novels the characters are so likeable, even black-sheep Al who you cannot help but fall in love with. Each and every character is well defined, even the ones you don't have much to do with, like horrible Bernice, she's there in your head. Lots of tangled webs going on, but that's the sort of story I like, trying to fathom out who has done what and why so many lives are in chaos. Poor Al, nothing is straightforward and he lurches from one crisis to another while keeping a couple of secrets that could destroy his family. Lots of good characters to root for, Kate and her slightly confused, elderly mother, and some to loathe - a controlling wife and a complaining and unforgiving ex - couple all the above with fabulous scenery and you have a winning mix.
