...Nefilim ex sticks to the script...,
20 Mar 2010
This review is from: Forbidden Pleasure (Audio CD)
Saints Of Eden was formed by ex-Nefilim member Cian Houchin and over the course of three albums - "The Other Side", "Proteus" and "Overload" sound exactly what you would expect a Bradford based offshoot of the Nefilim to sound like. And that would be goth metal with a side order of industrial, thank you very much.
And here, on album number four, "Forbidden Pleasure", things carry on in very much the same manner. Which is fine by me, a Rammstein / Paradise Lost loving gloomster. Although, credit where credit's due, they take some sideways steps, no more so than on the rock disco ready 'One'. A tune that will get one Andrew Eldritch shaking his head and thinking "if only I wasn't such an arse".
It's fairly evenly split between the club friendly tunes and the harder hitting ones, although sometimes they manage to get the meld just right, which is why 'Game Over' is my new favourite goth track. And metal loving mongers should certainly cock an ear to the mighty beast that is 'Scapegoat', all brutal percussion and aggressive vocals.
If anything it might be their diversity that is their downfall, what with the world of music dissolving into micro-genres, but hopefully there are enough people out there to make this the success it deserves to be.
