Wonderful example of world cinema,
This review is from: Kikujiro [DVD] (DVD)
I have loved Beat Takeshi's work ever since I was mesmerised by the splendid Zatoichi. As an actor, his little tics and winks make for enjoyable and unusual viewing but it his ability to direct films and intersperse them with random events, which really make for great watching. Other reviews hit the nail on the head but if I had any criticism of this at all, is that it's a little slow and the first 30 minutes were fairly stodgy. However, once Masao and the Yakuza are on the road, it's at times hilarious, poignant and mesmerising until the end. The fact that it was considered at the Cannes film festival is an endoresement of how good this film is and it won't disappoint.
