4.0 out of 5 stars A collectors dream - even with the errors!, 5 Jan. 2010

This review is from: Party (Audio CD)
On first inspection this very collectible Brazilian only "Best of" CD of PSB's tracks looks a little lame. Not one previously unreleased track, some nice remixes, but nothing that hasn't been released on CD before.

Upon listening the disappointment ramps up when you realise that someone screwed up and the 10inch mix of West End Girls is missing and replaced with the standard 7inch mix which I reckon just about everyone must have a copy of by now. This is a shame as the 10inch mix is awesome.

Then just when you thought you got over that, you find that the 7" mix of Paninaro is not the original version but in fact the remixed Paninaro '95. Not that I am complaining - I love both versions and this one is welcomed here rather than the somewhat hackneyed 80's version.

The next surprise comes when Go West starts. This isn't the version I heard on the radio, so how is it the 7" mix? It is in fact a previously unreleased 7" mix, a longer version of which was released, but this mix never saw the light of day! Hurray! A screw up it may be, but a mighty good one - this CD finally has an unreleased track on it which makes the whole package well worth the asking price for any collector!

The PSB's acknowleged the mistakes (made by EMI who seem to have a knack for screwing up PSB releases) but despite my initial disappointment, it actually did become worthwhile to buy!

Plus you can't fault the packaging, and Mark Farrow's inspired artwork!

Excellent informative review, which echoes my own views on EMI, Paninaro & especially West end girls, the 10" mix of which is indeed awesome and my favourite version. Despite being a pet shop geek, I wasn't going to buy this, as I already have all the tracks and had heard that the track listing was incorrect. However, as I'm now aware it contains this alternative version of Go West, I may have to go ahead and buy it after all.

Thanks for the review. The only reason I would have bought this would have been for the 10" mix of West End Girls which is indeed very good!

So it's worth £32.99 because the version of Go West is slightly different to normal?

That depends. If you can find it cheaper, then great. As a collector I would likely have paid that much for it, but fortunately I didn't. You're asking the wrong person really since I have paid 3 figure sums for PSB stuff in the past.
