This is not an easy read especially for a parent. However, Blake Morrison has dared to go where other, more cautious and perhaps more sensible, authors have feared to tread. It is a remarkable account of someone trying to process and deal with the disturbing detail of a deeply shocking and moving incident in recent British history. It is an intelligent, insightful and brave confrontation with a particularly nasty societal demon. One wonders if the author will ever fully exorcise it from his mind but I found it interesting to ponder some of the questions and suggestions that arise from his investigation. I fully recommend this deeply personal account of a sad and sorry episode, we need writers who are brave and foolish enough to go where we don’t want to, in order to try to understand the sometimes-perplexing times that we live in. Blake Morrison is one such writer; his intelligence, compassion and honesty shine throughout; I hope that his dreams are, in the main, sweet ones.
